In keeping with the aspirations and the character of the SOAWR Journal, this third edition provides a haven upon which the voices of millions of girls and women in Africa are amplified and where the voices of those who tirelessly fight for the cause of gender equality are raised and intensified. It is a space where we celebrate achievements, recognise struggles, and engage in thought-provoking conversations that inspire change.
This 28 September 2023 marks the global day of action for access to safe and legal abortion. We, the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa (SRRWA) of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Commission); the African Union Commission’s Women, Gender and Youth Directorate (AUC WGYD), as well the undersigned Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), under the umbrella of the Solidarity for African Women’s Rights (SOAWR) Coalition, reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the realization of women’s rights to access to safe and legal abortion. This Commentary aims to be a ‘one-stop-shop’ for anyone interested in the Maputo Protocol, such as researchers, teachers, students, practitioners, policymakers and activists.
The Forum on the Participation of NGOs in the Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) also known as the NGOs Forum is an advocacy platform established and coordinated by SOAWR Member the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies to promote advocacy, lobbying, and networking among human rights NGOs and between human rights NGOs and other stakeholders for the promotion and protection of human rights in Africa.
