Women’s Rights Litigation and the Maputo Protocol
The challenge of access to justice features prominently where rights of women are concerned. Though national and international legislative framework may offer protection to women’s rights, there may be failure in the legislation to recognize structural inequalities that place women at less than equal footing with men.
11th Anniversary: AU Women’s Rights Protocol
Friday 11th July 2014 marks the 11th Anniversary of the adoption of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (“The Maputo Protocol”) by AU states. It has been described by women’s rights law experts as one of the most progressive women’s human rights instruments in the world, with articles addressing inter alia development, peace, violence against women, sexual and reproductive health rights amongst others.
Calling on African Governments to Innovate for Girls’ Education
The Solidarity for African Women’s Rights Coalition (SOAWR) joins the global community in celebrating this year’s International Day of the Girl Child under the theme “Innovating for Girls Education.”
SOAWR Engagement AU 18th Ordinary Session
In January 2012, African governments met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the 20th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and 18th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU), under the theme “Boosting Intra-African Trade”.
SOAWR Coalition Review and Agenda Setting Meeting
SOAWR convened an annual review and agenda setting workshop in order to develop a critique of, reflection on and analysis of SOAWR activities for the past year by SOAWR Coalition members, and provide a forum through which Coalition members and organizations working on the Protocol could share experiences and best practices, evaluate the activities, learn from each other and strategize jointly on how to move the campaign forward.
