Cote D’Ivoire Ratifies the AU Protocol
SOAWR congratulates the Republic of Cote D’Ivoire on its ratification of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa. The instrument of ratification was deposited to the AU Commission on March 9th 2012. Download Statement
SOAWR participates in The Africa Unite Campaign
On the 5th March 2012, 75 men, women and youth commenced a three day trek to the top of Africa’s highest mountain – Mt. Kilimanjaro, standing at 19,341-ft above sea level. This was in support of the Africa UNiTE, campaign on ending violence against women and girls. The climbers represented 36 African countries and signified Africa’s commitment to ending violence against women and girls in our continent. The Climbers were flagged off by H.E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, president of the Republic of Tanzania, at Marangu Gate, and are expected to reach the summit on March 8 2012, International Women’s Day.
Statement Condemning the Recent Stripping of Women in Malawi
The 39 members of the Solidarity for African Women’s Rights Coalition based in 18 African countries vehemently condemn the stripping of women wearing trousers and short skirts by male vendors in three major cities in Malawi namely Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Blantyre. Download Statement
African Women’s Organizing For The Ratification And Implementation
The Maputo Protocol is a ground-breaking women’s rights legal instrument that expands and reinforces the rights provided in other human rights instruments. The Protocol provides a broad range of economic and social welfare rights for women. Importantly it was produced by Africans and pays attention to the concerns of African women. AWID interviewed Faiza Jama Mohamed, Director of Equality Now about the Solidarity for African Women’s Rights (SOAWR) campaign for the ratification and implementation of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Women also known as the Maputo Protocol or the African Women’s Protocol
