Our Nigerian member organisation, WRAPA, had a busy and successful May. Read what they’ve been up to…
“May started well with the validation meeting of the policy advisory designed as a tool for policy uptake seek, to ensure that measures are put in place for school girls in emergency periods such a COVID 19 by relevant state and non-state actors to ensure the re-enrolment of girls in schools during crisis situations. The validation meeting was conducted at the Ministry of Education in five project state namely; FCT, Adamawa, Jigawa, Plateau, Sokoto and Katsina under the MITIGATING COVID 19 IMPACT ON GIRLS EDUCATION: Recovery and Resilience Project supported by Mala Fund It is expected that the upscale of the document and its adoption will create more suitable learning opportunities for girls irrespective of both crisis and security challenges in northern Nigeria..
Riding on, the project team funded by Malala Fund met with the ministry of Education Permanent Secretary & Senior Secondary department on essential ways to provide adequate academic & psychosocial support to ensure girls re-enroll & complete their studies.
The Permanent Secretary pledged to support the work WRAPA is doing with schools in localities around FCT, including support to teachers, administrators, psychologists & the community to ensure girls learn in gender friendly environment and to review & validate the drafted policies that supports girls academic & mental productivity during & beyond a pandemic.
Moving Back to the field!
Community sensitization on the importance of girls education across project communities in the FCT. Four communities carried out this sensitization through the use of traditional media (town hall meetings, town criers and drama) The activity convened leaders of culture and faith within the communities’ advocate for the increased enrollment of girls within the community. Communities have up scaled this message in smaller units of the communities in the churches such as churches, mosques and group meetings. This activity reached out to over two hundred community members. WRAPA will continue to ride on the gains of these advocacy engagements to establish community partnerships that will foster girls education at target communities.
Lastly on the project, the Administrator’s Dialogue, held on the 31st of May drew school administrators particularly Principals and Vice Principals paneled by education governing boards (Secondary Education Board and Universal Basic Education Board). It was themed “Mainstreaming Gender in formal education”. The objective of this activity was to sensitize administrators on the need for gender mainstreaming in educational styles, practices, methods and resources. It sought to ensure the sensitivity of administrators in ensuring that deliberate actions are taken in schools to establish a gender neutral environment where girls can thrive & live life to their full potentials.
WRAPA Kick Starts The Phase Two (2) Of The Spotlight Initiative Project
WRAPA has began the phase two (2) of the Negotiating and Strengthening SGBV Protection for Women’s Rights Advocates/Marginalized Groups in Adamawa, Sokoto & the FCT under the Spotlight Initiative project supported by Joint EU-UN Women. The project team participated in the inception meeting in Adamawa & will participate in Sokoto state and FCT. The meeting reviewed impacts from the previous phase and looked through implementation plans with consolidation and effective coordination of Global Spotlight implementing partners. MDAs, Implementing Partners and regional UN Agencies were present for the phase 2 inception meeting.
On the Legal and Social Empowerment Program on Women’s Rights Project in Kaduna and Plateau States, Supported by Africa Women Development Fund (AWDF), an advocacy meeting with legislators & executive members to push for the speedy effective implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition #VAPP Act & the Gender & Equal Opportunity GEO Bill. The engagement increased the awareness on the laws, areas of concern on GBV & built up more appetites on the laws thus, energized the key stakeholders for more commitment & support in ensuring these laws are implemented & women & girls live life to their full potentials.
To close up the month, WRAPA was duly represented by Nathaniel Yemisi at the EU-ACT regional Cross Regional learning of Kano and FCT CSOs held in Lagos. It was a beautiful, informative and educational experience. Reflecting and sharing experiences from the cohorts made the meeting even more fruitful.”
