Women Direct
Women Direct is a network of like minded individuals and organizations in 6 countries in the Greater East Africa sub region. The Women Direct partner organisations work in areas of women leadership and decision making, peace building, reproductive health, rights awareness, socio-economic empowerment and legal aid. Women Direct works to expand the space in which women can engage with various actors and structures in the area of gender equality, human rights and governance. Women Direct's objectives are:
- Supporting the collective voice of women in leadership and decision making towards shaping national, regional and international policies
- Raising the profile and strengthening the capacities of the network partners
-linking network partners with strategic national, regional and international bodies
Women Direct was born out of partnership between the Education Centre for Women in Democracy (ECWD), several organizations in the region and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) in Kenya. With national forums held to launch Women Direct in each of the six countries of the Greater East Africa sub-region (Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda) and a regional launch held in Kigali the presence of Women Direct is being felt as its work promotes and facilitates an effective link and collective voice to enforce gender equality and human rights for good governance.
