People Opposing Women’s Abuse (POWA)
Established in 1979 as a response to the high levels of violence against women experienced in the community, POWA offers services to women who experienced domestic violence, sexual harassment, rape and adult survivors of incest. It also provides shelter to women who have experienced abuse and seeks to empower women through the process of counselling, education, advocacy and lobbying. POWA has also helped to bring the issue of women's rights into the mainstream public domain by highlighting the abuse of women as an issue that must be tackled by government and greater society.
